Advanced Suturing

This was the easier of the two workshops conducted by LF1SS. Although it was ‘simpler’ than microsurgical suturing, it very well required some fine skills. After the comprehensive theoretical explanation by the team, participants started practicing on a pig foot (way better than suturing pads). Who would think that mattresses were a thing in medical terminology! They’re very useful when the wound is too deep and wide for simple sutures. The vertical mattress suture consists of going far-far to near-near, and is used to close up deep wounds. Whereas the horizontal mattress suture is used to relieve tension on the wound by using a rectangular suture.

It was a learning experience for the newbies and great practice for the seasoned students. One of the participants said; “I’ve always known the basic simple interrupted suture, but learning variations made it much more fun”.
