ULTRASOUND WORKSHOP

On Saturday 19. October the UIMS clinical academic events team hosted their first workshop of the academic year - a general introduction to ultrasound. The event was hosted by the Second Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague. LF2’s very own MUDr. Azzat Al-Redouan, PhD. led the workshop, combining his expertise in ultrasound imaging and in teaching for a well-rounded experience for our participants. We are pleased to say that the workshop attracted students from all 6 years of their studies, and from various medical faculties!
With an almost-full attendance, the workshop was divided into 3 main parts - general orientation and introduction, common clinical uses of ultrasound and pathological examples. In the first part, students were shown the basic parts of an ultrasound, with a detailed focus on the various types of probes used in clinics - for example the differences between the abdominal and musculoskeletal probe.

The second part contained information on the common clinical implications for ultrasound and allowed our participants to experience how the probe should be held and moved to achieve a clear image. We visualised the kidneys, liver, gallbladder and parts of the musculoskeletal system. As this was a workshop tailored to medical students of all years, the basic principles of imaging were explained - ranging from echogenicity of structures to Doppler imaging.
In the final segment, students discussed and compared common examples of pathologies, which are visualised via ultrasound, namely fatty liver and cirrhosis, kidney stones and vessel occlusions and aneurysms. This part of the US was particularly enjoyed by the upper year students from the 4.-6. years, who could apply their pathology knowledge in an interactive discussion. That being said, Dr. Al-Redouan made sure all the participants could participate in this discussion, regardless of the year of study.

The following is an account of the workshop from one of our participants:
The ultrasound workshop conducted by UIMS not only helped me gain an insight on the basics of Ultrasound but also provided information on imaging of different organ systems with their pathologies. I'm also looking forward to attending more seminars with the team :)
We look forward to organising similar events in the future!
